Last year I was invited to send my story into Heroes In Recovery. I was reluctant. Again with the ego; “I am not young so my story won’t be “relevant”, my recovery journey is not unique enough” and so on. I was indulging in the ego of “less than”-as poisonous and misleading and as selfish as the ego of Bozo the Button Buster- of being too big.
The interference of my ego; that voice of too small, is so annoying. It does two things. It creates in me a sense of isolation. Secondly; it almost forces the other person to affirm me and my belonging. And then I thought – what the heck! My story is my story. I am not in “competition” with the amazing journies of transformation I have read about on their website . We need ALL the stories, the straight forward, the circuitous, the ‘rise from the ashes” and the “slow burn”.
Neither is useful. I am me. It is my story. It is my truth. If I stay on my side of the street, on my own [yoga] mat, and avoid comparing judging and apologizing I can fulfill the promises, and share the yummy goodness that is my life.
You can read the story here “Reaction, Redemption, Rebelling and Recovery”. Thank you Heroes in Recovery for including me by sharing my story.
